Shame on you

We let our guards down, become complacent, start acting stupid and the "stinkin thinking"
sets in. After i had let my salesreps fall into this, i blamed it on routine even though most of us were doing well, i needed a quick fix because negativity is deadly.Prisoners of war reported
much more suffering and death when this went unchecked as opposed to those who sought to implement the positive. Anyway i shared with them a story i had recently read. It was about this
door to door rep. he was definitely dealt bad cards at birth, he had many ailments. It took him
2 hrs to get out of bed and dress and eat. Since he could not drive he had to take the bus and where for us to walk 6 blocks would not be unusual, for him it was excrutiating pain and sweat.
I can barely convey to you how sad this story was, but he managed to sell his wares anyway-
not a lot, he didnt make a great income to say the least, and the part that got my attention
was that it took him 5 min . to walk up a driveway just to have the tenant pretend they werent home. I guess that sympathy is low for ANY salesperson, no matter their physical impediments.
On top of this the guy was cranky and rude and most customers didnt like him but under the circumstances they understood. Arriving home he couldnt even take his tie off he was so tired of the physical pain, and he would lay prostate for hours before he could summon the strength to
undress and eat. I think at this point you get the picture.

So here we are-no ailments, nice car that valets park for you after a nice scenic drive to the beach resort where we work and have an unlimited 5 star buffet for free then we tell lies to each other for an hour, then our pre set appointments arrive half sold already- we now have another 5 star free lunch with them and make the sale providing we are not hung-over from last nights
extravaganza, then we pick up our daily cash bonus and proceed to spend it in areas with no social reedeming qualities-------and we are complaining??? shame on you, you should feel guilty
and bless the lord for what you have. It worked, the crew was silent, staring at each other because the truth hurts. But we were back at it soon enough--because of habit--and we will share on another page something about habit.

About sales

About 20% of people you talk to tried sales at one time in their life, usually because it was the only job available- out of high school or college. Selling shoes etc. If it was encyclopedias, vacuum cleaners- most failed miserably. These people, providing they like you, have some respect for you as they remember how hard it was. Sales make the business world spin---with the pros
and wobble with the cons. Since anybody can do their job badly, lets stick to the pros.

IN PERSPECTIVE

Pros make very good money say 75k to 600K yearly. Providing you have no benefits whatsoever as an independent contractor (401-health-profit sharing) you better be good at it
because the normal job might have had more stability and benefits weighed out logically.

COMPARE THIS SCENARIO

Doctors, lawyers, and associated professionals must invest oodles of money and precious
time to get their career going say 100,000 for 6-8 years education and for a clinic maybe 200-to
millions for equipment they must pay back, not to mention continuing education and money not earned in the interim.
In addition to this they have to be pretty good at their craft- the failure rate has to be near 0%
would you hire a lawyer with 6 clients on death row out of 100 clients?
would you visit a doctor who loses one too many patients? They must keep failure under 1%
to survive.
On the other hand a salesperson can have minimal or no education, not to say they dont have phd's either but be that as it may they dont need the 8 years and tons of money to get started
and they are applauded with a 80% or more failure rate--20% success and you are in the money! All you need is a pen! fancy that. I was teaching medium level reps one time , and after the above study i asked how many had a pen -about 30% did not. We all laughed because they were on their way already making a good income. Point made. Now then, imagine a rep who took it a step further and studied and read everything they could, took as many self -help and betterment courses they could get there hands on- these are true pros and there are levels too.
Once you start buying land and cars cash within 2 months in the same time it took a normal job type 3 years to do its hard to look back and desire this life again, but if you are not making the big bucks then youre not serious or its not for you trust me on this one. Best part it is a lot of fun.

How i got into the time share business part 4

At exactly 10 o'clock be at the foyer of this penthouse. you will be escorted in and give the check to madame china. yawn...big deal...however this penthouse had bodyguards downstairs and all over, i usually peeked in envelopes for everybodies safety--this one was for 20,000 a lot back then..but what got my interest was the memo- for booth in front of arnies. the booth was only as wide as a chimney..man i'm in the wrong biz. the booth was used to promote time share tours gifts etc. but it generated 150,000 a mo. in sales, o.k that wasnt hard to figure out. Arnies by the way was a small private museum owned and operated by Arnold Coward, he had been a jewish
prisoner of war and had been severely tortured by the nazis. He had quite a collection of torture apparatus from all over and all ages, he bought some murano glass from me. I dont remember
the details but he was hit by a car real bad. Not many people that i saw went in for the tour, i mean heres clem and ethel on their 50th anniversary, who never really took a vacation before
and here they are on kuhio ave. should we take the torture tour or the time share tour? the torture tour had no free lunch. The chinese rented the 3 story museum bldg. for 6000 a mo. and got 20,000 for the booth the size of a door! these chinese landlords had a vast holding of property all over waikiki and were rude to me everytime i delivered checks. I saw them once at holiday mart arguing over the price of malasadas. Arnie also had some priceless ancient art, some from egypt, thats why he appreciated the things i would sell him. God bless his soul
he had a penchant for life after what he had been thru.

How i got into the time share business part 3

My job was to do to anything 4 people wanted from me; Mr. E, the lawyer, the c.pa. the real estate president, in order for them to fulfill their duties in a more efficient manner. my contribution was to politically navigate priorities without conflict and minimize those that arose

between them. They had just started what was to become one of the foremost and pioneering

time share companies in the western hemisphere. I was witness to a brilliant man and saw firsthand how he wheeled and dealed. He knew how to motivate people.

My first week on the job was routine: take money-give money, deliver stuff, make sure salesrooms were overflowing with liquor and chicken wings do odd jobs-entertain people.

run somewhere with a 20,000 bag of money so the world wouldnt blow up.

One friday the magnificent 4 tell me to stand at his desk like a statue. I walk in with the cpa

and we both stand like statues. He is very intent watching mr.e like he was going to perform brain surgery and i dont know why they want me to listen ,but the solemnity of it gave the occassion much importance. Mr. E looked at his watch (gold- diamonds) and placed an auto dialer in the phone-- for you kids out there---an auto dialer was a plastic card you inserted

individually into the phone and it would dial for you--wow! he had 6 properties in vacation spots

3 in hawaii- lake tahoe- vegas-spain- and one of the first in mexico, so he times the calls

as a done deal, woe the person one the other end who didnt have their act together-anyway

heres the calls verbatim -hello what do you have? and he would write it down with a stubby

pencil ,next call the same and so forth 6 offices and another 9 offsites around the U.S. no chit-chat no pleasantries straight to the point; hows miffy-muffy- none of that. all calls completed,

he would do some figuring and make one last call to a paper buyer (promissory notes) i have

200,000, how much? they would insult each other for a while and i never got to see the final

but he was selling it for 150,000 more or less. right then and there an aide to the cpa would bring in last weeks hard copies of the same as they were sent to hi. from all over. they wanted me to hear how serious this was, as the buyer and him did it in good faith. they were one week ahead of each other. Now my job was to race to the airport and put $100 in the hand of a commercial pilot and the 200,000 p.notes. who would give it to someone in seattle 6hrs. later.

on his word alone in good faith the buyer would deposit the 150.000 into his account right there and then. now he started writting checks from there. this took less than an hour all else was mundane, and clericals were left to the scribes. mr e now would go to michelles for lunch. what was funny was that time share buyers were still at the beach or on the very plane with their
p. notes in the pilots cabin, unaware of the high finance. I know some of you are smirking at
all this with your new fangled high falooting laser quick modern ways but this was 1978.
one time im talking with a pilot and ask whats up with that hangar across the way-there was an old quonset type hangar with a worn out dc6 or 7 with oil dripping out of the turboprops he said
these people want to start a cargo company called dhl they have that one plane, you might want to use them, are you kidding ill lose my job if i put that money on 100,000 parts flying in formation.

How i got into the time share business PART 2

I was intrigued by the offer so i showed up to this fancy King street office in honolulu. A secretary scoffed at me and told me i was not a fit there. Then this guy casually interviews me, turns out he was the real estate president for hawaii. Another guy asks me questions- he was the lawyer, then the c.pa. After scoping me out for an hour they parade me in to mr E's office like i had never met him before- im standing in front of his desk with these 3 guys behind me and i felt the power he had over everyone- then he asks do you drink alcohol? well i have a beer once in a whi--I DONT WANT ANY ALCOHOLICS HERE!! he blurts cutting me off, and if you want to work here i want an abstract before noon. ceremoniously i am paraded back out and past an office doorway where 12 desks with bean counters are enjoying all of this. I can tell from the 3 faces that events unfolding are not in my favor. Whats an abstract i asked? the japanese lawyer said -you have go to the police dept. and get proof of your driving record, criminal etc. most of what you need to get bonded for a sensitive job. This is a test i thought to myself, and im about to call it off but this guy has really rattled my chain and i am being challenged, because first of all it was 10:30 and a normal person- it would take a day or two traffic included, if youve driven around hotel st. in downtown honolulu you know the daunting task ahead of me. in addition to this it is 1978 there were no computers or high speed anything this was the the age of triplicate forms and carbon copies. Since i had been a mechanic before and serviced gov. accounts, i called a police friend-customer for help. I can do this and this and you owe me bra (means brother in hawaii) but downtown is another matter, youre on your own there-this is japanese territory.

later sometime i will explain cultural hiearchies in hawaii civil and gov. getting back to the story

i have less than 2hrs to do all this and most is being done by a portoguese friend(many immigrated there) I run at least 3 red lights, break speed limits and double park in front of a gov. building go up the stairs in the lobby and lucky me its almost empty- of course it is -its lunch hour! theres a guy there leaving the reception desk, i plead with him to retrieve what i need-he has the sympathy of a ww2 suicide plane- i offered to buy dinner for his whole family

at the wisteria (5-star rest.) he pulls out a badge and says he can arrest me for bribery!! PLAN B

i blame it all on an evil haole (white man-mr.e)use child psychology on his ass by stating the portoguese are helping me as we speak down at hpd and isnt it what its all about helping each other? please mister i need this job-plus i still get rims and tires at 40% off at tire wharehouse!

can you get e.t. rims? those i get for free! not so but i will deal with this later-miracle i didnt get a collection of tickets plastered to my windshield or towed away and i made it back to the office

right after 12 and ran into mr.e coming out of the elevator with his entourage and presented the papers to him-these are fake he says nobody could have done all this in an hour and a half and i dont believe you dont have traffic offences either-- $1000 dollars bet on it- he wouldnt and he looked me in the eyes for just a second---i passed the test with flying colors. he told his lawyer take him up and turn everything over to him. the lawyer was visibly upset as they had been on their way in a rolls royce to the most expensive restaurant (michelles) and he was going to be left behind. but more importantly he had reservations about my performance and im pretty sure he checked me out later. in the office i was handed the keys to 3 waikiki penthouses, 3 buildings and keys to 4 cars. and a pager and a credit card. you have an important job, most people cant do it, i dont know where he found you but if you mess up consider the state of hawaii
off limits for you forever.the 12 desks with the bean counters reflected their thoughts insofar as their faces were concerned as to wether i would make it. later in las vegas this same lawyer and i witnessed a most amazing
event that took me 23 years to figure out and im sure he will never forget it either.

How i got into the time share business PART 1

In 1978 i was an independent antique dealer in hawaii. Calling a client one day, her husband said i was selling overpriced junk-what!!! i said no problem i would give the money back and pick up the items the next day, without skipping a beat. He said he didnt believe me and was calling my bluff. I showed up at their waikiki penthouse and this burl ives type guy with bifocals was calling the showdown off. Obviously she wasnt going to give any of it back, and he wanted to know what i was up to as he didnt think i could even get half of what i had charged her. Its simple i explained, your wife is wealthy and so are her friends, wealthy people buy whatever they want
they are hard to sell to though. If she buys from me so will her friends, i had sold her my latest haul for almost no profit just to gain entrance to this circle of hers. Had you convinced her to return it - no loss for me i would sell it elsewhere for a lot more thats why i had no problem dispatching your uneducated okole (hawaiian for behind). he laughed and asked how much time
i dedicated to this venture. I told him i ran 2 spots in flea markets, i would leave one person at each
while shopping the rest of the market looking for treasures-sat and sun, the rest of the week was buying or taking wish lists to private homes just like yours. In fact i was the first person to buy a spot at aloha stadium, that sun. there was only 2 vendors .when i left hawaii there was 600 vendors. What do you do the rest of the time? I told him i was studying to take the state dept. foreign service career test. He offered me to work for him doing odd jobs in one of his companies.
his wife was Ginnie Simms, a big band singer for kay kaiser in ww2 and came out in many movies from the 40's-50's. She had been married to Hyatt Von Dehn of Hyatt fame and had decorated the first hyatt hotels, she gave the hotels their name because he was at a loss what to call them. He was Don Eastvold- prior Attorney General for the state of Washington and washington state senator 2 terms. His office had just gotten rid of a kid who was not focused
in his duties and they desperately needed someone to fill his spot. TO BE CONTINUED

He who does not read will forever be a child--CICERO

I felt i was the only one...i read an article of this writer who said he read the whole encyclopedia

from A to Z. actually quite a few have admited it. So did i, i felt better now, knowing i was not the only nutcase out there. Not because of what i did but because of the age i did it. I was 10. I did it because i was bored, and it was fascinating to absorb new information. World book and the brittanica 1953 edition, these tomes have a lot more than the newer ones, far more. Anyway

i did well in school. I also read all of our school books that we had to buy ahead of time. I knew

i was different because the other kids would be involved in growing up and playing, so was i- but

how could you not see the value in shaving off all the time wasted in reports, essays, exams, quizzes and reading. I breezed thru most of it, except math, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when i remember the mental anguish created by my inability here. Seeing now how knowledge can enhance your life, i read everything i could get my hands on. Ignorance creates fear because you walk around wondering about things you dont understand and you distance yourself from others who do. I read all of the following from 1965 and on.

national geographic-time-life-readers digest-scientific american-science-popular mechanics
and similar reading material but in spanish, my second language. As an antique dealer in new york and hawaii i would never sell auction lots of old books without reading them all first.
I once had a lot of almost every issue of life- look-popular mechanics- st.nicholas(pre-boys life)
They were from 1938 to 1946, hundreds of them- i read them all and had quite an education, which actually enhanced my sales career, as it made me more knowledgeable in many areas
and i had a better "connect" with the older generation. I also read tons of journals from the A.M.A. -the lancet- and very weird collections of political, religious, and esoteric thought, some from the 16oo's and on. Speed reading also helps a lot-take a speed reading course, contrary to popular belief you actually enjoy the reading more. I used to be a pack rat, antique dealers have to be, but i lost or sold some books i wish i had kept. One that comes to mind is 1000 and 1
inventions by thomas edison and alexander graham bell--how to make fake gold-how to make a battery out of a lemon-how to make fire with ice only--great book. Before i went to college my mother had money and time to kill so she opened an occult book store in phoenix in 1974.
As i mentioned she had the money-books from almost every country and every topic-at least 2000 books. Yes i read them all. I have the privilege to read lit. in spanish as well. Another
collection i had to sell was a strange box given to every member of a cult in the 1920's in the desert of california where they wore conical hats and lived in conical houses and the box had
aluminum center records with chants and so on-this cult evolved into (this info. is on a need to know basis and you dont need to know)

Anyways it pays to read. the internet has saved me a lot of money-in the 80's i think i was spending $300 a month at least, now i have free reading material....remember that commercial

of the guy up late at night with bags under his eyes and the computer says WARNING---YOU HAVE REACHED THE END OF THE INTERNET!! i dread the day.
